THE EX – Too many cowboys

17 Jun

Historically valuable anarchic art/punk album from Holland. The Ex constituted the colossal bridge between the social/political ethos of the freely Communist ideas and the early 80s restless spirit of the musical underground in Central Europe.Never again the pathos for a different society was so tight, eclectic, culturally energetic and targeted…

CHRISTIAN DEATH – The iron mask (picture disc)

17 Jun

Important band/collective of the early punk influenced goth/death rock scene of California together with(the better ones) 45 Grave,Consernatives,Mighty Sphincter and Pompeii 99.C.D were the first to be commercially recognizable, but also the ones(and especially Roz Williams) to create the strong goth caricature of this musical branch, taking away its political/critical roots and ethos and finally deeping inside a sea of drugs, cheap sexual provocation and ”alternative” money hunting. The good thing was the brainchild of Christian Death and one of the most influential punk/hardcore bands of early 80s,Rikk Agnew’s Adolescents.

MOVING TARGETS – Penetration

17 Jun

First class British punk album era 1977/78 by Pauline Murray and her noisy gang.Underrated punk pop anthems, aggressive political-feminist spirit and loud choruses, made Penetration the first female fronted punk act in London even before Siouxsie and the Banshees.Pauline’s later trials as Pauline Murray and the Invisible Girls, based in Liverpool, helped and produced by Martin Hannett (legendary producer of Joy Division) and went towards a more moody psych influenced post/punk direction. Both essential.

MADNESS – One step beyond…

17 Jun

It’s only a first wave sympathetic ska/groovy album with some pseudo/intellectual punkish overtones in its musical body.Nor a competitor to the mod/power pop explosion of late to early 80s,neither a gentle artistic achievement for the outcasts of the punk rock wars in Britain(that means those who hated noise, turned alternative dancers during these flaming years) when you also had Selecter,Bad Manners and Fun Boy Three(are you listening Terry Hall?).

ANTENA – Seaside week end

17 Jun

Influential ambient/new wave pop from France with twists and turns and airy female vocals from Isabel Antena. If she only knew that her vocal style would open commercial roads for every Saint Etienne(90′s) or Nouvelle Vague and Piano Magic(00′s and then),perhaps her artistic adventure inside the European ethereal sounds, would be endless. All these before terms like ”Acid Jazz” and ”Lounge Pop” become freaky hippy and meaningless..
